A second teenage boy has been charged after a violent brawl at a Northbridge fireworks event left a 17-year-old injured and a community shaken.

Police Charge Second Teen as Investigation Widens

Police initially arrested two teens, aged 15 and 16, near the scene after a short foot chase. The 16-year-old was charged with multiple offences, including assault, affray, offensive behaviour, resisting arrest and assaulting a police officer. He was also found to be armed at the time. The 15-year-old, who was first released while inquiries continued, was re-arrested five days later and charged with affray and offensive language.

Both teens were granted conditional bail and are due to appear in a children’s court on Tuesday, 3 June. Police said further arrests may follow as they continue to review video evidence from the night.

Locals Left Stunned by Public Attack

A security guard attempted to stop the assault but was unable to hold back the group. Officers from North Shore Police arrived soon after, and the injured boy was taken to Royal North Shore Hospital with facial injuries.

The event, which drew hundreds of local families, quickly turned from celebration to concern. Residents described feeling shocked and unsettled by the violence in what is usually a quiet, family-friendly suburb.

Police Condemn Violence, Community Wants Change

Superintendent Paul Devaney called the video footage “disturbing” and said a small group had hijacked what was meant to be a safe community celebration. A female officer was also reportedly kicked in the face during the incident, adding to the seriousness of the charges laid.

He said officers are committed to ensuring future events remain safe and urged anyone with footage or information to contact police. In response, some locals are now pushing for stronger safety measures at youth-focused events and discussing how to better engage teens before problems escalate.

Northbridge Responds with Support and Reflection

Community leaders and police are encouraging parents to speak with their children about violence, responsibility and peer pressure. Their goal is to keep public events peaceful and inclusive.

As the investigation continues, many in Northbridge are focusing on how to support the young victim and prevent similar incidents in the future. Conversations have already started around rebuilding trust and making public spaces safer for everyone.
